Umno to get stakeholders suggestions to empower shariah laws

Umno would request stakeholders for suggestions to amend the Federal Constitution to empower shariah laws.

This would include the Islamic Development Department and the Minister in Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic Affairs Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, said party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

“Regarding the suggestion to amend the Constitution… we will ask Jakim, the minister in charge of Islamic affairs, and other relevant stakeholders to look into whether there is a need to do that.

“This is so that the incident won’t happen again because it will only tarnish the image of our judiciary or the syariah legal system.

“Whereas the (court decision) yesterday had nothing to do with undermining the status or power of the (syariah) courts,” Hasan (above) told reporters today after attending MCA Chinese New Year celebration in Kuala Lumpur.

He however denied that the Federal Court decision that declared 16 out of 18 provisions in the Kelantan Shariah Criminal Offences Enactment 2019 was an affront to Islam and shariah.
