Rahul Gandhi opts out of traditional family seat of Amethi
Default Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of the Indian National Congress has been moved away from the constituency that he has been traditionally contesting in the general election.
The INC decided that Gandhi would be contesting in the Rae Bareli constituency instead of the traditional seat of Amethi.
Rae Bareli is also considered a safe seat for Congress.
Rahul’s grandmother, Indira Gandhi had represented the constituency from 1967 to 1977. His mother had represented Rae Bareli for 20 years.
Rahul represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019.
Lok Sabha is the equivalent to Dewan Rakyat in Malaysia.
He managed to return to Lok Sabha in 2019 by contesting in Wayanad, Kerala.
For those uninitiated about Indian politics, candidates can contest in multiple seats.
Elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh would take place from 19 April to 1 June.
