Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and wife Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are deeply saddened by the catastrophic flood that happened in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Brazil especially those affected. We stand ready to provide assistance to ease the burden of those victims,” he said in a Facebook post to Brazil president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Over 155,000 people are homeless, 131 are still unaccounted for and 90 people died as a result of massive floods in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul on Tuesday.

There is also a looming food crisis as people are forced to live without food.

The flood came about due to extreme rainfall after a heatwave that was caused by El Nino this year.

The ongoing global warming exacerbated the disaster.
