UM raises alarm over fake certificates; urges public vigilance
Universiti Malaya (UM) recently discovered that unscrupulous individuals have been using its name to produce numerous fake certificates, prompting the university to warn everyone to stay vigilant.
“We would like to emphasize that UM has never issued the mentioned certificates and asserts that this is an act of fraud that can tarnish the reputation of our institution,” the university said via a Facebook post.
The university today urged all parties to exercise caution with regard to any suspicious documents.
“If you receive or come across any documents whose authenticity is in doubt, please report them to UM immediately,” UM said.
Fake certificates have been around for quite some time.
Last year, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz announced that Muhammad Azhar Ali had joined the Perdana Fellowship program under his ministry.
In the infographic shared, Azhar allegedly obtained a BEE in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Universiti Malaya (UM).
Internet users noted that while UM provides a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BEE), it does not offer a specialization in Electronics and Communications Engineering, as claimed by Azhar. Additionally, the post misspelled “communications.”
Azhar was famously known for falsely claiming to have received a scholarship from NASA four years ago.
