Identity theft crisis: Wong’s photos used in dozens of fake accounts

Datin Wong Mei Choo has been a victim of scammers over the past few months. She is the wife of Malaysia’s badminton legend, Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Scammers have been using her photos and identities to create at least 50 fake accounts falsely claiming that her husband endorses a Japanese air conditioning brand.

She had reported these fake accounts and had them removed, but new ones keep popping up.

“It’s never-ending. After reporting 50 fake accounts previously, another 50 plus fake accounts emerged. We have reported this to Facebook and are hoping for better actions.

“For now, my friends and fans, please be aware of this situation,” she said via a Facebook post.

A check on Facebook revealed that new fake accounts have been created by scammers.

Scammers appropriated photos of Wong and her family to falsely claim that her husband endorses air conditioners.

The fake accounts were selling 1,000 units of the air conditioners at the price of RM89 each.

Some of the photos were manipulated to appear as if Wong were attending official events with political figures.

“Don’t fall for this trick and be cautious with your own accounts too!” she advises the public.
