All worked relentlessly in Sg Bakap, don’t blame us Umno Veterans
Umno veterans’ club secretary Mustapha Yaakub’s accusation is unacceptable, said Penang DAP organising secretary Jason H’ng Mooi Lye.
“The accusation by Umno veterans’ club secretary Mustapha Yaakub, that DAP failed to reach Chinese voters resulting in PH’s defeat in the Sungai Bakap by-election, is unacceptable,” said H’ng in a statement.
He mentioned that all component parties of the PH unity government have worked tirelessly and provided strong support to the PH candidate in this by-election.
“Many DAP leaders campaigned relentlessly in Sungai Bakap throughout the campaign period.
“However, the results of the Sungai Bakap by-election reflect the choice of the voters in Sungai Bakap.
“We must accept and respect the decision made by the voters and continue to strive to bring positive changes and convince the public, rather than making accusations and blaming any party,” he said.
H’ng noted that the wave of change currently being brought by the unity government is seen as difficult to accept and has resulted in the public losing confidence in the government.
“Nevertheless, the unity government will intensify efforts to protect the people’s welfare, implementing policies for the benefit of the people so that everyone can experience the reforms brought by the unity government.
“The unity government will also double efforts and listen to the grassroots voices to improve services to the public to regain the confidence and support of the people,” he added.
Yesterday, Mustapha said the Umno veterans’ club received information that DAP leaders had failed to approach the Chinese voters.
Perikatan Nasional claimed a decisive victory in the July 6 Sungai Bakap by-election. Their candidate, Abidin Ismail, won by a substantial margin, defeating PH candidate Dr Joohari Ariffin by 4,267 votes.
