DPM counters Tun M on water rates

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof countered former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad regarding the low water rates to Singapore.

“Whether Malaysia has been providing a subsidy (to Singapore) or not, we are reviewing all the existing agreements,” he said, reported NST.

He said this after opening the Water Malaysia Specialised Conference and Exhibition 2024 here today.

Tun Dr. Mahathir, in his statement last Friday, said that for the past 61 years, Malaysia has effectively subsidized Singapore by providing 250 million gallons of raw water daily at the low rate of 3 sen (SGD 0.01) per 1,000 gallons since 1962.

According to the 1962 Johor-Singapore Water Agreement, Malaysia provides Singapore with 250 million gallons of raw water daily at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons. In exchange, Malaysia can purchase treated water from Singapore at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons. This agreement remains in effect until 2061.
