First full-length feature film on May 13 incident in cinema today
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said that Snow in Midsummer, Malaysia’s first full-length feature film depicting the May 13 incident, premiered in Malaysia cinemas today.
“This film not only marks the first time a Malaysian production has secured nationwide screening rights for a full-length feature based on the May 13 events but also passes the censorship board’s review with strong support from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) FINAS Malaysia.
“Snow in Midsummer marks a significant leap for Malaysian cinema, pushing the boundaries of storytelling by exploring the complexities of a previously underexplored historical event.
“It serves as a tremendous source of inspiration for Malaysian filmmakers,” she said via a Facebook post.
Teo said those familiar with Keat Aun’s work would certainly recognize his ability to weave poignant storytelling with historical depth.
“Snow in Midsummer promises to be a film that will resonate deeply with audiences, both emotionally and historically,” she said.
However she said film production hasn’t been easy with the rise of digital streaming platforms, she urges the public to support the film.
“Facing the rise of digital streaming platforms, film production has been significantly affected in terms of box office revenue.
“Therefore, I hope everyone will support Snow in Midsummer by purchasing a ticket when it officially releases on July 18 (today),” she said.
The film was directed by Malaysian filmmaker Chong Keat Aun and features Malaysia actress Pauline Tan alongside Malaysia actor Alvin Wong.
The movie is currently screening at GSC, TGV, and MBO cinemas across Malaysia.
