Tamil Language teachers numbers in secondary schools isn’t critical

The need for Tamil Language teachers is not critical in national secondary schools, confirmed Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

“As of May 31, 2024, 624 is needed and there are 640 teachers.

“To ensure an even spread of teachers teachers are relocated according to schools that opted to have Tamil Language with students who are keen to study them,” said Fadhlina in a written reply.

R Yuneswaran raised the issue of Tamil Language teachers shortage in national secondary schools. He asked about the major stumbling factor that prevented secondary school students from sitting for the subject in the SPM examinations and plans to resolve the issue.

The minister also said of the methods and strategic approaches implemented so that more can be appointed as teachers.

The four are:

cluster subject expansion.
teachers intake are widened to high potential graduates from private and foreign universities.
teachers appointed via Contract of Service. This is for graduates who have no education background. They are offered one year post graduate diploma in education.
Education Ministry’s teachers placement and intake committee.
