PDRM on war against cyberbullying

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain declared that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is on war mode against cyberbullies.

On their end, the police are tracking cyberbullies and are working closely with other authorities on tougher measures to combat the problem.

He said cyberbullying can lead to threats and crimes against victims, and affect their families.

“Elements of cyberbullying were detected in the case of Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah’s murder, where some had passed judgment on the families of the victim and suspect,” he said, Berita Harian reported.

“There are many forms of cyberbullying which can include insulting, threatening and uttering obscenities against the family members of those involved in the case, to the point it creates false perceptions.”

The recent death of TikTok influencer A Rajeswary or Esha due to cyberbullying exemplified the issue.

Two individuals were charged in court in Esha’s case.

Razarudin also equated the speculations by social media users on police investigations to cyberbullying.

“It is as if they (cyberbullies) know everything about the case, the suspect and victim.

“Imagine how those close to the suspect or victims feel when they see provocative comments based on unsubstantiated information. That’s cyberbullying.”

He wanted an end to deaths caused by cyberbullying.

“This is not a game. This can affect a victim’s emotions.”

He also urged the public to lodge reports against incidents of cyberbullying.
