Biden quits US presidential race
US President Joseph R Biden Jr, 81, has quit the re-election campaign.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” he announced.
His campaign had taken a turn to the worse since a disastrous debate on June 27 against Republican’s top candidate Donald Trump.
This means he would lead the US until his term ends in January 2025.
Following that there has been calls from within the Democrats for Biden to stand down.
Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s candidate against Trump.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” said the 59-year-old Harris.
Trump and his team poured scorn on Biden and the Democrats.
“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!” Trump wrote. “Whoever the Left puts up now will just be more of the same,” Trump said on Truth Social platform.
“Harris will be even worse for the people of our nation than Joe Biden. Harris has been the Enabler in Chief for Crooked Joe this entire time. They own each other’s records, and there is no distance between the two,” his campaign team said.
Republican’s vice president candidate JD Vance had this to say on Biden and Harris.
“Joe Biden has been the worst President in my lifetime and Kamala Harris has been right there with him every step of the way,” the Republican senator wrote on X, saying Harris had “lied for nearly four years about Biden’s mental capacity.”
“President Trump and I are ready to save America, whoever’s at the top of the Democrat ticket. Bring it on.
