Sanusi embarked on pointless research over Penang’s past

Penang Chow Kon Yeow told his Kedah counterpart Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor that the latter’s research on the status of Penang is pointless since the historical facts on the island state is well known.

“There is no need for you to go around the world to gather 20,000 documents about these well-known historical facts. We are not denying that Penang used to be a part of Kedah in the past.

“Please accept that Penang is an independent state and that its position is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,” Chow was quoted as saying by Buletin Mutiara in an event last night in George Town.

His reaction comes in response to Sanusi’s claim that a research team founded by the state government would conclude its finding end of this year.

The team had already collected 20,000 archives and dociments from as far back of 1821.

“We want to establish Kedah and Penang’s status. From there, we will decide on our next course of action. We are not looking for free money,” he was reported as saying.

He added that Kedah is building a case on Penang’s status as a leased state when the British colonised the peninsula.

Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng also took a shot at Sanusi.

“You can produce 20,000 or even 2 million documents. I only need to present one copy of the Federal Constitution which is absolutely supreme,” said Lim, reported Sin Chew Daily.

This ongoing issue would escalate tensions between both Penang and Kedah.
