Police support new social media licensing to tackle commercial crime
Police supported the new regulatory framework for social media platforms with over eight million users, as it addresses long-standing issues with inadequate laws to combat commercial crimes, said Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf.
“However, police will work closely with both domestic and international agencies to gather intelligence and investigate cybercrime.
“Where there are criminal elements involved, we will investigate in accordance with the available laws,” he said, reported New Straits Times.
Ramli emphasised that their strategy has always involved a collaborative approach and close coordination with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure compliance and tackle violations effectively.
Yesterday MCMC announced that from August 1, social media and online messaging platforms in Malaysia with more than eight million users must secure a government licence.
The license would be effective from January 1, 2025.
This new regulatory framework is designed to improve online safety.
