Anwar assures probe into Teoh Beng Hock’s murder case
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed to reopen the investigation into the Teoh Beng Hock’s murder case.
He assured that the murder case would be investigated transparently and fairly.
“I assure you that this investigation will be conducted transparently and fairly, without interference from any parties, particularly considering the Court of Appeal’s views on this case from September 5, 2014,” Anwar said in a Facebook post after the meeting.
Earlier today, he met with Beng Hock’s family in Putrajaya and had an extensive discussion with Beng Hock’s parents, Teng Shuw Hoi and Teoh Leong Hwee, as well as Beng Hock’s siblings, Er Jia and Lee Lan.
In the meeting, Beng Hock’s family proposed reopening the murder case with the assistance of international crime experts.
Anwar has agreed to this proposal because he understands the family’s feelings.
“I listened to the family’s grievances and requests. I have been closely following this case for a long time and understand the family’s sorrow and their ongoing fight for justice for the deceased.
“I have stated the government’s position to agree to the police reopening the investigation into Beng Hock’s death,” he said.
Beng Hock was questioned overnight on the 14th floor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in Shah Alam on July 16, 2009.
The following day, he was found dead on the building’s fifth-floor landing.
A Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) concluded in July 2011 that his death was a suicide.
In September 2014, the Court of Appeal determined that Beng Hock’s death resulted from multiple injuries sustained in a fall from a building.
The court concluded that the injuries were exacerbated by unlawful acts, likely committed by MACC officers involved in the case.
Beng Hock’s parents sought a judicial review to force the police to finalize their investigation into his death.
They filed the request in 2022 January.
