Lim Siew Khim slams criticism of Olympic badminton team sportswear

Malicious and discriminatory attention on Malaysian women badminton doubles pair for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan is unwarranted.

This is because their sportswear met international standards, said Penang’s Social Development and Welfare Committee chairman, Lim Siew Khim.

“Such malicious and discriminatory attention is unacceptable.

“Instead, we should focus on their dedication and hard work for the country’s honour.

“Especially during the National Day month, their performance should inspire patriotism among all Malaysians.

“Furthermore, with advancements in sports science, athletes’ clothing is designed to meet specific needs, including convenience, comfort, and moisture-wicking properties.

“Athletes know best what attire they need for their competitions,” Lim said.

Lim was referring to the recent incident where Tan and Thinaah faced unfair criticism from Pas supporter Asmira Hashi over their court attire.

Asmira suggested that the team should wear outfits that adhere to Islamic principles and cover the aurat.

Lim stated that female athletes’ attire should not be subjected to criticism and restrictions.

Such comments not only damage racial harmony but also do not benefit national relations.

She also mentioned that the two players are not Muslims, so their clothing rights should not be interfered with based on religious stances.

As a full-time female politician, Lim firmly believes that female athletes should have the right to wear suitable sportswear for their competitions.
