Social media app for Malaysians not a priority

Having a social media app for Malaysians is not a priority for the government.

However private companies who wish to develop them are welcome to take up the initiative, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

“However, if any private companies in Malaysia wish to develop these platforms, we won’t stop them. They can contact Mosti (Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry) or MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) for assistance,” he said.

Yesterday Fahmi said that the government is mulling over a proposal to develop a social media app specifically for Malaysians.

The proposal for a social media application catering for Malaysians was made by celebrity host Datuk Aznil Nawawi.

The proposal was done in reaction to Meta pulling down posts made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
