Minister to attend brewery sponsored charity concert for Chinese school
To assure the Chinese community that the government does not prevent breweries from holding fundraising events, Science Minister Chang Lih Kang will attend the Tiger Chinese Education Charity Concert (CECC) at Shen Jai High School, Ipoh on October 19.
“To reassure everyone about the government’s policy (of not hindering brewery sponsored charity concert for Chinese school), I will attend the CECC event in Ipoh as a cabinet minister, showing my commitment in both presence and respect.
“The beer companies have been holding fundraising charity events for Chinese schools for a long time, not just every 1 or 2 years, or every 5 or 10 years.
“Therefore, the Chinese community does not need to worry about extremists picking up issues,” he said, reported Oriental Daily.
On July 22, the education ministry issued a reminder for schools to adhere to guidelines that prohibit accepting donations from gambling, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol sales.
This reminder followed the circulation of a viral photo showing Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu attending a school charity event sponsored by Tiger Beer.
By July 26, the ministry clarified that vernacular schools could still receive donations through their boards of directors and foundations.
However, the prohibition on displaying alcohol brand logos during fundraising events held on school premises remains firmly in place.
