A win in Nenggiri, a boost for Zahid in Umno

BN’s win in Nenggiri was contributed by a combination of factors that includes Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s proactive approach and the moves made by the unity government coalition at the federal level.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership that was focused on the people’s issues and implementation without political rhetoric was able to attract Nenggiri voters to support the unity government.

“Zahid Hamidi too is seen as the hero of rural development as he introduced reforms for rural and regional development,” said Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya.

“Cost of living and subsidy rationalisation was a less impactful issue due to targeted aid. It also showed that the people have begun to understand fuel subsidy rationalisation which was balanced with pay hike for civil servants.”

He was commenting on BN’s victory in Nenggiri. Unofficial results indicated BN won with 9,091 votes and a majority of 3,355 votes.

“The placement of an automated teller machine too helped in an area where there was no financial service. It eased voters and influenced some to vote for the unity government. Such initiatives is a reflection that the government is serious about efforts to resolve the local needs which contributed a positive perception among the voters.

Awang Azman also viewed the win in Nenggiri as one that can be used by Zahid Hamidi to solidify his position within Umno in the long term in light of the Umno general assembly that would take place next week.

“The results can be used in the Umno AGM to push for the continuation of cooperation with coalitions in the future.

“This win is evidence that cooperating with PH can produce results that would help Zahid’s strategy and leadership in removing enemies within Umno.”
