Set up Indian education fund with RM100 million annual allocation

Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) urged the government to create a game changer by establishing an Indian education fund with an annual allocation of RM100 million for Indian students in higher education institutions nationwide.

He made the call while acknowledging the government’s specific and general allocation for the Indian community via MITRA and several other initiatives.

“We need a game changer for the Indian community. I would like to propose an Indian community education fund set up to assist Indian students in higher education institutions nationwide.

A kick off fund amounting to RM100 million can be provided for 5,000 Indian children annually,” he said while elaborating on his call for an Indian education fund.

“I propose that Indian undergraduates from poor families be given RM20,000 one off payment,” he added.

He also pointed out that the allocation from MITRA for undergraduate is measly.

“I know that under MITRA, undergraduates can get RM2000 but that is not even enough to purchase a laptop.

He also justified his suggestion.

“Many Indian students are getting placements in higher education institution but those from lower income group are forced to spend more.

“It is even worse if they get into private education centre.

“It is not my intention to neglect the Malays and the others.

“We have to admit that the Indians are sidelined and they are disproportionately disadvantaged in various aspects including in education and jobs.”

He said this while debating Budget 2025.

Under Budget 2025, MITRA was allocated RM100 million whereas Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia and Tekun Nasional received RM30,000 to develop entrepreneurs. There are also some allocation for TVET.

These are the specific allocations for the Indian community.
