Why not recognise UEC like recognising foreign recognised certificates?
Chow Yu Hui (PH-Raub) pushed for Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) holders be accepted by public university via direct intake similar to the recognition of foreign recognised certificates.
“Most universities have allowed direct intakes based on various certificates such as A Level, Australian Matriculation, International Baccalaureate and Gao Gao from China.
“Hence I hope that the Higher Education Ministry would do an in-depth study to pave a way so that UEC certificates are accepted as a condition for public universities’ intake under the direct intake system that does not involve UPU.
“I believe UEC holders have the right to be reated the same as those holding certificates from foreign countries such as A Levels, IB and Australian Matriculation,” Chow said while debating Budget 2025.
Students gaining entry into public universities via direct intake are not eligible for education subsidies.
The DAP lawmaker pointed out that UEC is currently recognised by over 200 foreign universities abroad due to its quality as well as by the state governments of Penang and Sarawak.
“Public universities have not recognised the UEC.
“This caused the UEC holders to be denied opportunities to study in a public university.
“The implication of this is a group of students studies and develops abroad.
“I urge the government not to stop the public universities from recognising UEC under its direct intake system as soon as possible so that UEC graduates can be retained and contribute to the Malaysian economy.”
The UEC is not recognised by the federal government due to it not meeting the standards of Bahasa Malaysia at national schools.
