Umno, Pas, Bersatu merger: Not workable as a single entity

Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Redzuan Yusof’s call for the merger of Umno, Pas and Bersatu would not work if the three parties merges as one single entity, said Bersatu associate wing vice chief R Sanjeevan.

“If he is talking about merger as to become one party, I don’t think it is technically possible.

“All parties have its own constitutions. If the parties want to merge, how would it work in terms of legality and assets?”

“What would happen to the movable and immovable assets when there is a merger?

“There are a lot of things that needs to be considered,” he told Harapan Daily.

Umno, for instance, owns PWTC.

At present, Umno heads BN coalition and sits in the coalition government. Pas and Bersatu are in the federal opposition coalition – Perikatan Nasional.

Redzuan has called for a merger by way of a coalition involving the three major Malay based parties. He said that the party leaders would use diplomatic strategy to form such a coalition.

Sanjeevan said that it is more workable for the three parties to work together in a coalition like the previously touted Muafakat Nasional.

“If Pakatan Harapan can work with Umno, then why not the three parties work together since Malays are the majority community.”

He also pointed out that there were efforts previously for all the Indian based parties to merge as a single entity but it did not materialise.
