Number of prisoners sentenced to death reduced tremendously

Under the Revision of Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life (Temporary Jurisdiction of The Federal Court) Act 2023, the number of prisoners who was sentenced to death have been reduced tremendously.

The number of individuals sentenced to death for the first time since January 1 until October 14 2024 based on the courts are as the following:

High Court 12
Appeals Court 6

The above figures was revealed by Law and Institutional Reforms Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in her written reply to Ramkarpal Singh(PH-Bukit Gelugor).

Ramkarpal had asked for the figure of those sentenced to death for the first time and the number of convicts who had their death sentence reduced to life sentence for the above mentioned period.

“A total of 866 individuals had their death sentence reduced at the Federal Court. From this number, 52 appealed for their sentence to be reduced to imprisonment.

“The balance 814 had their death sentence reduced through a revision application hearing that was conducted under the Revision of Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life (Temporary Jurisdiction of The Federal Court) Act 2023.”

Azalina said this in a written reply to Ramkarpal.
