Apply for the compulsory licensing on the basis of your goodwill, MP tells X
R Yuneswaran (PH-Segamat) has urged social media platform -X to apply for the compulsory social media platform licensing that has come into effect since yesterday on the basis of goodwill.
The platform claimed it has not met the minimum threshold of eight million users.
“I do note that X (formerly Twitter) said that it has not met the threshold of 8 million users which would qualify it for a license application. Perhaps it could be a gesture of goodwill for them to consider applying in any case.
“Similarly, I would like to urge Google, as the parent company of YouTube, to engage constructively with MCMC to resolve any outstanding issues and to comply with the licensing framework,” said the federal lawmaker in a statement in a statement today.
Compulsory licensing of the various social media platforms have been legislated following the rise of cybercrimes committed on these platforms.
As for now four social media platforms – WeChat, Telegram, Meta and Tik Tok – have already taken steps to register in Malaysia.
He also pointed out that that Telegram had played a vital role in Ops Pedo that saw the arrest of 13 individuals being detained for possessing and distributing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).
