Build cross channel rail link with the LRT simultaneously, says Penang Chief Minister
The upcoming light rail transit (LRT) project should be constructed simultaneously with the cross channel rail link in Butterworth, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
“This (LRT project) is one line. It should be done in one go, concurrently. Both should be completed together.
“But this is a federal project and only MRT Corp can make the final decision,” he said, reported FMT.
The LRT line is a RM10 billion federal government project that aims to improve Penang’s public transport system.
Its first section will connect Bayan Lepas with Komtar stretching 29 km with 21 stations.
The project first announced in February 2024 would cross the North Channel and includes Penang Sentral in Seberang Perai.
Penang Sentral is the public transport hub in Penang adjacent to the Butterworth KTM station.
Chow added one of the LRT station would be located 200 metres from the Penang International Airport that is currently undergoing expansion to accommodate the station.
