Non-Malay election candidates for AMANAH?
Non-Malay, non-Muslim AMANAH members would get a chance to contest in mixed constituency seats, confirmed AMANAH secretary general, Faiz Fadzil.
“We do appreciate them. We have to see the demographics of the seats. If it is a Malay based seat, then they can’t.
“If it is a mixed seat, we will consider non-Malay candidates. If we can get more mixed seats we will consider,” said Faiz during an exclusive interview yesterday.
He said this in response to a question on whether AMANAH would field non-Malays in the election.
Elaborating further, he pointed out that his party which is a coalition partner in Pakatan Harapan won the Bayan Lepas state seat in Penang as they fielded a Malay candidate against Gerakan president Dominic Lau who is with the federal opposition, Perikatan Nasional.
AMANAH is a Malay based party that opened its membership to the minority communities as well.
It has thus far contested both in Malay majority and mixed seats.
He pointed out that it was more pertinent to have winnable candidates contesting winnable seats.
He also added that race also wasn’t a factor in determining a candidate.
He also pointed out that in the present environment no single party can win to form a government.
“Whatever the results is, it is the coalition that wins. No single party can win.”
