No need for Anti Racial Discrimination Act now, says Unity Minister

There is no necessity to table an Anti Racial Discrimination Act since present laws in place are sufficient.

“The present laws are sufficient to ensure race relations are maintained.

“Anyone who takes an action or makes a statement that can cause racial or religious disharmony can be investigated and charged in court,” said National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang during ministers question time.

Sections 295, 269, 298, 298A, 504, 505, 501 and 506 of the Penal Code, section 8A(1) of the Publishing Presses and Printing Act, section 53 of the Communication and Multimedia Act and section 4(1) of the Sedition Act are the relevant laws for this matter, he said.

He also said that officials from his department were sent to mediate the controversy sparked by a corn seller who refused to sell corn to Indians.

The seller referred to Indians using the k word which is a derogatory term.

Aaron said this in response to a question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan).

In his supplementary question, Lim asked for the number of nations that have implemented the Anti Racial Discrimination Act.

He also pointed out the fact that Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) had blamed non-Bumiputeras for the rise of corruption in Malaysia.
