Both Tan and Fong issued a joint statement, explaining the reasons for them to do so.

“Their strategic approach in terms of “party-building initiatives” and “election preparedness” reflects a well-coordinated plan and synergy between internal and external efforts, keeping pace with contemporary developments.

“Their competence gives us the assurance and confidence that the party’s future is in capable hands.”

Tan and Fong also said that DAP has maintained its principles for reforms over the years successfully.

They also everyone within the DAP, calling the members “unsung heroes” who sacrificed for the party’s cause.

“It is only fitting that we extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all our comrades; indeed it is through your steadfast dedication and sacrifices that DAP is where we are today, standing strong.

“The party belongs to all of us, and together we can all be proud of and celebrate its achievements.”

Tan is the longest serving MP, since 1995 whereas Fong has been MP since 1999.

The decision to withdraw also comes as there is an increased pressure against party veterans leading the party.
