Singapore’s 14th General Election on May 3
Singapore’s 14th General Election is scheduled to take place on May 3.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam dissolved parliament yesterday.
Nomination would be held on Apr 23.
Campaigns would go on for a period of nine days. No campaigns would be allowed on May 2, the cooling – off day.
This is the first general election under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong who came into power in May 2024.
Wong has also been the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secretary-general since December 2024.
There are 97 seats in 33 constituencies. The 33 are made up of 18 Group Representation Constituencies (GRC) and 15 Single Member Constituencies (SMC).
During the 13th general election held in 2020, PAP retained power with 61.24 percent votes which translates to 83 out of 93 seats.
Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh was formally recognised as Opposition Leader after the party claimed its second GRC.
In total there would be 11 parties contesting the elections time around. The 11 includes two opposition alliances.
