NGOs role in nation building
V SIVAKUMAR
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are vital players in the nation-building process.
They act as a bridge between the government and the people, ensuring that voices from the grassroots level are heard.
Some NGOs operate in alignment with government policies and maintain a neutral stance, supporting various government initiatives.
Others take on a more critical, check-and-balance role, holding authorities accountable in the interest of public welfare.
At their core, NGOs must remain people-centric, working to uplift and empower the communities they serve.
While many NGOs operate at a small, local level—focusing on specific groups or neighbourhoods—others function at a national or even international scale, influencing broader social and policy issues.
As a people’s representative, I place great importance on engaging with NGOs—whether they are based within the Batu Gajah constituency or beyond.
I also welcome opportunities to collaborate with international organisations when appropriate.
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet with the committee of Persatuan Kebajikan Masyarakat India Proaktif Bidor, Perak in Batu Gajah.
Our discussion focused on various community issues affecting both local and national levels.
Engaging in such dialogues allows elected representatives like myself to stay attuned to current challenges and the sentiments of the people.
These interactions strengthen our understanding and enable us to serve more effectively.
