First US origin Pope chosen to lead the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church has elected its first pope from the US – Robert Prevost, as the Pope.

The 69-year-old has taken the name Leo XIV.

In his first address, Leo said, “Peace be with you” and called for disarmed and disarming peace dialogue and missionary evangelization.

His first appearance in traditional red cape and trappings of the papacy indicates a return to tradition.

“Together, we must try to find out how to be a missionary church, a church that builds bridges, establishes dialogue, that’s always open to receive — like on this piazza with open arms — to be able to receive everybody that needs our charity, our presence, dialogue and love,” Leo said in near-perfect Italian.

Leo is expected to continue the policies of the Pope Francis.
