Upholding transparency and integrity in the appointment of the Chief Justice

V GANABATIRAU

The appointment of the next Chief Justice is a matter of national significance. It is important that this process is conducted in a transparent, merit-based, and impartial manner, in keeping with the principles of democracy and good governance.

The independence and integrity of the judiciary are critical to maintaining public trust in the justice system and upholding the doctrine of separation of powers. An independent judiciary — credible and free from undue influence — ensures that justice is administered fairly and without fear or favour.

I am confident that the government remains committed to upholding these values, and that the appointment process will reflect the highest standards of integrity, guided by qualifications, experience, and proper institutional checks and balances.

The Bar Council, as an important stakeholder in the legal and judicial system, is to be expected to support and advocate for these principles of transparency, independence, and accountability — which are fundamental to preserving public confidence in the rule of law.

It is the shared responsibility of all — elected representatives, institutions, professional bodies, and the public — to protect the integrity of our judiciary and promote good governance for the benefit of the nation.
