MPF, PFA: The long term measures for pig farming in Malaysia

Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government would offer fund assistance for farmers to implement Closed Pig Farm Transformation Program by implementing Modern Pig Farming (MPF) and Pig Farming Area (PFA).

MPF and PFA are long term plans that would be implemented in states that are involved in pig farming.

“State governments would supervise the pig farming industry via State Pig Farming Enactment to ensure that pig farming are under control, doesn’t pollute the environment and is sustainable.

“Penang, Perak, Selangor Sabah are encouraging MPF whereas Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan are setting up zones under PFA,” said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

He revealed this in his written reply to Lee Chean Chung (PH-Petaling Jaya) who asked about the steps taken to ensure the security in pig farming and the domestic pork supply in view of food security.

As of 2023, the Self Sustainability Rate (SSR) for pork is 69 percent.

Other short term measures include approving 131 pig abattoirs in nations to export pork, engagements with farmers, butchers and relevant agencies.
