‘PMX needs to de-escalate Thailand – Cambodia conflict’

Dewan Rakyat special select committee on international relations and international trade Wong Chen has called upon Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to convene a meeting to de-escalate the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

“Border clashes have started between Thailand and Cambodia. Malaysia as the ASEAN chair must act immediately to convene a meeting to de-escalate this conflict,” said Wong Chen via his Facebook page today.

“Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have appointed as his ASEAN advisors, Hun Sen and Thaksin, both senior political figures in Cambodia and Thailand respectively. He must utilise this link for peace.”

Hun Sen is currently president of the Cambodian Senate whereas Thaksin Shinawatra is a former prime minister of Thailand.

Both of the ASEAN member states clashed along a disputed section of their border after weeks of simmering tension.

Clashes first broke out near a Khmer Hindu temple, Ta Muen Thom.

Both sides have accused each other of sparking the clashes.

A day ago, both nations recalled their envoys and downgraded diplomatic relations.
