Fiesta San Pedro to be recognised soon as national heritage
Fiesta San Pedro, the festival celebrated by Melaka’s Portuguese community, will be recognised as Malaysia’s cultural heritage.
Tourism Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing said that the fiesta integrates various elements of cultural heritage.
A heritage experts committee under his ministry have already met on July 3 to consider the application to recognise Fiesta San Pedro as an intangible cultural heritage.
“After going through the supporting documents and justifications, the committee agreed to recommend that the festival be recognised as a heritage under the National Heritage Act 2005,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.
After the due recognition is given, the festival will be gazetted under the act.
Tiong said this in response to Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) who queried for an update on his application for the festival to be recognised as a national heritage festival.
The application was made in 2022.
