Backbenchers, analyst pan Bersatu’s early GE16 claim

Opposition party Bersatu’s estimate that the 16th general election would be called in as early as next year was panned by backbenchers and analysts alike as it is nothing but political fodder.

Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) said there was no need for the parliament to be dissolved earlier since the nation is on the right track economically and policies are being implemented by the unity government.

“The question of dissolution is in the hands of the Prime Minister. The opposition can speculate but their speculation are inaccurate,” he said, Sinar Harian reported.

He said this in reference to Bersatu secretary general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali claiming that the national polls would be held next year.

Zahir Hassan (PH-Wangsa Maju) pointed out that the opposition is playing up the issue since the parliament term has passed its half term mark.

“It is the season to spin about GE16 since the parliament has been in session for two and a half years.

“The possibility for GE 16 to take place next year is quite slim without any drastic changes,” he said.

Political analyst Professor Dr Ahmad Marthada Mohamad pointed the results of the upcoming Sabah state polls would not determine the nation’s political pattern.

“The Sabah state polls pattern differs vastly compared to the Peninsula hence it is not suitable to be an indicator.

“We cannot predict anything based on what has happened in the past,” he said.

The analyst expects the government to be steadfast in completing its term before calling for GE16 since it is focusing on implementing policies for the well being of the people.

Bersatu is attempting to raise the issue of GE16 even though there is no loss of support to the government of the day, he said.
