Questions over Pas’ democracy arises when incumbent leaders retain their positions in polls
Almost all positions in Pas polls this year saw its incumbents retain their respective positions.
Pas president Tan Sri Hadi Awang and deputy Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim retained their positions to helm the party for another term.
The three vice presidents – Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Bagan Serai MP Datuk Idris Ahmad and Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Amar Abdullah – too retained their posts.
Incumbents also retained their positions in the Dewan Ulama.
Similarly central Pas Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden and Pas Women’s Wing chief Nuridah Salleh retained their posts without contests.
The result on Pas polls was announced by Pas polls committee chairman Wan Rohimi Wan Daud.
The only election this time around would be seen in the positions for the central working committee.
The party would be holding its 71st annual general meeting end of this month in Kedah.
Going by the fact that almost all incumbents have retained their positions, raises several questions.
Does Pas understand the need for party polls in a functioning democracy?
Is Pas capable to bring about changes?
How are the young blood going to be given leadership opportunities when the party polls have largely seen incumbents retained?
The above are relevant questions if Pas claim that it holds the majority support of the Malays is true.
