Only three social media platforms have obtained licensing
Only three social media platforms have obtained the Application Service Provider Class [ASP(C)], revealed Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
“As of Aug 31 2025, three social media and internet messaging service provider companies have been licensed under ASP(C).
“They are WeChat International Pvt Ltd, TikTok Pvt Ltd and Telegram Messenger Inc.
“The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission continues to engage with Meta and Google to ensure issues related to implementation and enforcement of the licensing framework can be resolved to create safer online environment.”
Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp whereas Google is the parent company of YouTube.
“X claimed its Malaysian users have not reached 8 million user threshold that requires licensing.”
Fahmi said this in his written response to Senator Datuk Dr Hatta Ramli.
