Amendments to Federal Constitution, two new bills to pave way for AG – public prosecutor’s separation of powers
Separation of powers between the Attorney General (AG) and public prosecutor would finally become a reality next year with amendments made to the Federal Constitution, along with two new bills.
“An amendment to Federal Constitution that determines the source of power will be tabled next year. After that two more bills will be tabled.
“One is to set the salary of public prosecutors and the others is a bill that would amend 19 acts,” said Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said during an oral reply session to Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) in the Dewan Rakyat.
The separation of powers of the Attorney General and public prosecutor is among the issues that was called for by Pakatan Harapan.
Responding to a follow up question from Takiyuddin, she said that the decision to make the Attorney General a member of the administration and answerable to the Parliament would depend on the policy decision made by the government of the day.
