NGOs to protest against UPM dog killings tomorrow
Three NGOs have joined hands to hold a peaceful assembly to protest the dog killings that was carried out by UPM.
The three are Lawyers for Animal Rights, Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) and Global Human Rights Federation (GHRF).
A number of other animal rights groups have also lent their support in solidarity.
The protest would be held tomorrow at 3.30 pm in front of Pintu 13, UPM.
The three groups have three demands for UPM:
- Immediately stop shooting dogs.
- Those responsible must be brought to the court of justice.
- Manage street dogs ethically and responsibly.
GHRF head S Shashi Kumar said that the protest was necessary since there was a systemic genocide against man’s best friends.
“On record, 18 dogs have been killed and 5 puppies have been poisoned but we have received information that many more are being killed.
“It is a systemic genocide against abandoned dogs. Hence there is a need for us to assemble peacefully and demand justice against the killings of the dogs.
“We invite all the students to also stand with us,” he said.
Peka president Rajesh Nagarajan was more forthright in his demand.
“We want the vice chancellor suspended,” he said.
“Why is the director for occupational safety and health not charged?
“Why haven’t UPM lodge a police report, knowing very well who the perpetrators are?”
