Allocated funds for Indians is beyond RM100 million in MITRA, says PM Anwar
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim lambasted the notion that the Indian community has only been allocated RM100 million via the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA).
“How much did we approve for the Indian community in 2024? RM 2 billion. Yes. But it is not in the media, not in the narrative. The narrative is MITRA – RM100 million. That’s a very small portion from the total.
“This year, 2025 and estimated for Budget 2025, for Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme for Indians (SJPP) is RM1.6 billion. Business Financing Guarantee Scheme for Indians to be in business RM600 million.
“For this year we continue with RM600 million under the Indian Community Funding Guarantee Scheme to assist the young into business.”
Anwar pointed out the allocations as he was concerned over some who claimed that the government had done nothing for the community.
He reminded the Indians that the financial assistance given by the Madani government was bigger than what was allocated by the previous government.
“What we are doing here is much more than what has been done by Bersatu and Pas who only talks a lot.”
Anwar also addressed concerns about the marginalisation of Indian students in the centralised Unit Pusat Universiti (UPU) admission process, saying the government was working to resolve the long-standing issue.
He said an additional 1,500 university placements were allocated in the 2026 budget, which was open to STPM students from various racial backgrounds.
“I don’t think this is enough, but the government is looking for ways to improve and expand its capacity,” he added.
