MP: Focus on the Indian community empowerment programmes under various ministries

Klang MP V Ganabatirau has called for more focus Indian community empowerment programmes that are carried under the various ministries.

“Empowerment efforts under the various ministries, be it Agriculture and Food Security Ministry or Investment Trade and Industries Ministry are needed.

“How are the empowerment done in different ministries?” he told Harapan Daily in response to Economy Ministry’s written reply.

The ministry said that Indian community have improved its average income, median income along with significant drop in absolute poverty.

Ganabatirau reminded that it was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who had said that the Indians are the poorest of the poor among the B40 group during the general election campaign.

He also reminded the government that the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA) cannot be used as a one size fit all solution for all the issues.

“MITRA cannot be used as piggy bank since it is meant to empower and transform the community.”

There has been a shift in MITRA’s programmes with the focus being social issues instead of what it is meant to be.

“There is a need to create more T20 individuals among Indians.”
