DAP takes on UPKO over divisive Malaya vs local party narrative
Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for Kapayan Datuk Jannie Lasimbang took former ally UPKO president Datuk Ewon to task for stoking up a divisive Malaya vs local party narrative in the latter’s campaign against PH and the DAP.
“Political differences can be discussed rationally, but demonising ex-long-term partners neither helps voters make informed decisions nor hides the fact that UPKO is resorting to emotional tactics under election pressure,” she said in a statement.
“We shared hardships during the years when we had the least resources. Now UPKO smears its old partners just for votes — it is saddening to see political loyalty discarded so easily.”
“Differences in opinion can be discussed, but turning former comrades into enemies — that is a matter of character, not political stance.”
Jannie who is a DAP candidate also argued that the DAP is a local party.
“DAP has been rooted in Sabah since 1978, working closely with local civil rights groups, indigenous organisations, and community bodies.
“We took root in Sabah even during the years when we had no power and no resources. Our organisation, leaders, and volunteers are almost entirely Sabahans.”
Hence the portrayal of DAP as an outsider party or Malaya party is not only factually wrong but disrespectful to Sabahans who have long supported the party.
She also pointed out that for a party that is campaigning on the basis of being a local party, UPKO has held cabinet positions under the previous BN led government and co-operated with parties from Peninsula Malaysia.
“Yet now UPKO turns around and accuses others of being ‘not local enough’. This narrative is simply not credible and raises doubts about its political sincerity.”
She stressed the need for practical cooperation with other parties to resolve issues that is plaguing the people of Sabah.
“Sabah needs practical cooperation, not new animosity. Stirring up a ‘Sabah versus Malaya’ sentiment only weakens Sabah’s ability to secure federal resources and collaboration — ultimately, the people will be the ones who suffer.”
As for herself Jannie wants to prove her mettle through her action and service.
“I will continue proving myself through action and service, rather than letting Sabah fall into pointless division once again.”
“Show voters vision, policy, and capability — not hate-based framing and label politics.”
UPKO joined PH in August 2021 and quit the coalition earlier this month as the party disagreed with the PH led federal government’s decision to appeal against the grounds of judgment in the case surrounding Sabah’s 40% revenue claim.
The state polls in Sabah will be held on Nov 29.
