Penang to lead the way in establishing the first Tamil secondary school
Penang is prepared to lead the way in establishing the first Tamil secondary school in Malaysia even though there are more primary Tamil schools in Perak compared to Penang.
The issue was raised to Kumaran Krishnan the Bagan Dalam state assemblyman who proposed last month that the first Tamil secondary school be built in Bagan Dalam itself.
“Perak currently has more Tamil primary schools than Penang, roughly 134 SJKT with about 11,231 students, compared to Penang’s 28 SJKT with around 5,382 students.
“But our motion in Penang is not about who has more primary schools. it’s about giving our children the first opportunity in Malaysia to continue Tamil-medium education beyond Year 6, by establishing the first Tamil secondary school (SMJKT),” Kumaran told Harapan Daily via WhatsApp.
“Penang is ready to lead this because the State Government has long invested in all 28 Tamil schools here and the land has already been earmarked for Tamil education use.”
“We have a strong, united support system from PIBG, NGOs and the community and most importantly, we are working closely with the Ministry of Education to make this a reality.”
“This isn’t about Penang against Perak. It’s Penang leading the way, so that Tamil medium secondary education becomes available for Tamil students nationwide.”
