Questions over Durian Tunggal police shootout at the Dewan Negara

The Durian Tunggal police shootout case in Melaka was raised at Dewan Negara this afternoon with Senator Dr A Lingeshwaran raising several key questions.

“Is it true that all three of the victims had past criminal records. I understand one of them had no cases at all.

“What is the grade of the officer leading the special task force and the police officials who are investigating this case.

“Is it true that the investigation paper was opened under section 307 for attempted murder and not section 302 of the Penal Code for murder?

“Why didn’t the police contact the family of the victim to obtain an audio recording to the point that the family had to go to Bukit Aman and hand it over themselves?

“Has the police contacted the victims’ families to record any statements?”

The above are the questions posed by Lingeshwaran for the Home Minister to respond during his Supply Bill 2026 speech.

The three victims who were shot to death late last month are M Puspanathan, 21, T Poovaneswaran, 24, and G Logeswaran, 29.

The police had claimed that there were armed with machetes.

However an audio recording of phone conversation of a victim with his wife indicated that the three were already on their knees when the killing took place.

On another note, Lingeshwaran suggested the implementation of body cameras and the formation of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the matter.

These measures were suggested so that the police can regain the trust and confidence of the police.
