Durian Tunggal police shootout: AGC reclassifies it as murder
The Attorney General Chambers (AGC) have confirmed that the Durian Tunggal police shootout case has been reclassified under section 302 of the Penal Code.
“Based on the briefing and suggestions from the police, the Chambers have agreed and instructed that the investigation is reclassified under section 302 Penal Code for the offence of murder.
“An initial scrutiny indicated several follow up action needs to be taken by the police to complete its investigation before a final decision can be taken,” said the AGC in a statement today.
The three victims – Puspanathan Murulitharan, 21; Poonesvaran Tiagarajan, 24; and Logeswaran Georgie, 29 – were killed on November 24.
Lawyers representing the families of the victims – Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreet Singh Sohanpal have been demanding the police to reclassify the case under section 302 instead 307.
Police initially claimed that the three came towards the police with machetes.
However a recording of a phone conversation between the late Logeswaran and his wife, Jayashree and evidence from anonymous have debunked the police’s version of what transpired.
In response to this latest development, Rajesh and Sachpreet are hoping for a swift, efficient & impartial probe since the families are entitled to justice.
“The families are relieved that the authorities have finally classified it correctly as murder. It is the right thing to do. Now, we hope for a swift, efficient & impartial probe under sec 302.
“The families, the widows, parents & children of those who were killed, cannot get back those who were killed, but at the very least they are entitled to justice under the law.”
