Does Umno’s Akmal have immunity?

Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) questioned the ‘immunity’ that has been granted to Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh over the current national flag gaffe.

He called for Akmal to be probed for sedition.

The former deputy law minister justified his call due to Akmal’s “extreme and unacceptable” statements that were divisive with racial undertones.

“Yet, until now, there has been no action taken by the authorities against Akmal.

“My question is, why? Does he have immunity or privilege from investigation or prosecution?” he said when debating the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat.

He pointed out that Akmal also could be investigated for criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and statements conducing to public mischief.

“I urge the relevant ministry to respond urgently as to whether action will be taken soon,” Ramparkal said.

Referring to the ultimatum that Akmal gave to the Attorney General’s Chambers with regards to a shop that hung the Jalur Gemilang upside down, he pointed out that the ultimatum put undue pressure on the investigation.

“Will it (AGC) issue a statement warning Akmal not to interfere in the investigation? If not, why is action not being taken when it is clear that action should be immediate?”
