Early polls in Penang, Chow hints

Penang may have a shorter term instead of a full five year term. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has hinted that it is unlikely for the state government to serve out its full term.

“DAP must be fully prepared to face the upcoming elections, which could take place within the next 18 to 24 months, either at the state or national level,” said Chow.

“…logically, we still have three more years. However, if the state election is held simultaneously with the (next) general election, the term for the Penang administration will be shortened.”

“Therefore, I hope Penang DAP will be fully prepared to face the upcoming election to secure a fresh mandate for the state,” said Chow after attending a dialogue with Kepala Batas DAP members.

The Sabah state election is scheduled to be held by the end of this year followed by Sarawak, Johor and Melaka.

Penang was one of the states that previously conducted its polls along with five other state governments, separately from the federal government.

It was held on August 12, 2023.

The 15th general election was held on November 19 2022.

Under Chow’s leadership, PH formed the state government by winning 29 out of 40 seats which is a contrast to the 37 it won during GE14 in 2018.

Chow reminded Penang DAP machinery to be prepared for the polls.

“We must strengthen our readiness with the support of elected representatives, local councillors, Village Community Management Council (MPKK) members, and the Penang DAP machinery,” Chow, who is the Batu Kawan MP said.

Chow who is also Padang Kota state assemblyman is serving his final term as Penang chief minister.
