Adult Malaysian Indians are facing three non-communicable diseases, mental health issues
The findings in the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023 shows that adult Malaysian Indians are facing higher prevalence when they have depression, diabetes and obesity.
The percentage of Indians with depression is 6.9% (approximately 84,598 people). It is higher than the national prevalence of 4.6%.
Their prevalence for diabetes is 26.4% (approximately 350,492 people) is higher than the national prevalence at 15.6%.
Approximately 334,320 Indians or 28.6% are obese. The percentage is higher than the national prevalence of 21.8%.
The community’s prevalence for hypertension, hyper cholesterolemia and overweight are closer to national prevalence percentages.
Their ignorance of their health status for diabetes is 5.6%, hypertension 7.4% and hyper cholesterolemia is 12.6%.
Helath Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad revealed the above figures in his written reply to Senator Datuk Seri S Vell Paari.
The MIC leader asked for the latest statistics regarding mental and non communicable diseases among the Indians.
