MCMC, police take action; disabled TikTok user assaulted

A Selangor state assemblyman has called upon the police and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission to beef up enforcement related to cyberbullying.

This is in light of cases where bullying in cyberspace have spread to the physical world.

“I urge the police and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission to take action against live TikTok sessions,” said S Preakas, the Kota Kemuning state assemblyman.

He pointed out that sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code criminalises various forms of bullying whereas section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act addresses offensive content.

“Esha Clause without enforcement serves no purpose.

“It lacks enforcement. Police need to take action. That will send out the message to users not to abuse, threaten and assault people,” said Kota Kemuning assemblyman S Preakas during a press conference that highlighted the case of a lady who was physically assaulted after having altercations on live Tik Tok.

The assault was streamed live on TikTok.

A Rani, 45, a physically disabled employee of McDonald’s in Serdang was confronted and assaulted by a group of 4 men and 3 women on Dec 8.

Rani suffers from physical disability due to spinal injuries. She is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment as she was depressed following the death of her only child in January this year.

“A lady punched my face several times. One of the men live streamed the incident while insulting me.

“I was so insulted over the incident. I have ain on my face and ears. There were cuts on my lips,” Rani told the press.

A police report was subsequently made at the Bandar Kinrara police station.

Preakas also revealed a similar case that took place in Penang on Dec 17. A mob ambush was carried out and the victim was assaulted. this was also streamed live.
