Royal addendum: Govt always upheld royalty, federal constitution, judiciary

Law and institutional reforms minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said argued that the government always upheld the royal institution, respected the federal constitution and upheld the freedom of the judiciary with regards to the implementation of the royal addendum.

“The position of the legislative with regards to pardon and the implementation of a sentence is based on the Federal Constitution and existing laws.

“In line with Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, the prerogative powers of the Agong to pardon, postpone or reduce the sentence of offences committed in the Federal Territories are implemented based on advice of the Pardons Board,” she said in her written reply.

Azalina said this in response to Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran).

Ismail queried on the ministry’s stand after the people expressed their disappointment when the court rejected the implementation of the royal addendum regarding a house arrest for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
